Well, not exactly. While Malibu's Most Wanted featured a goofy white guy obsessed with rap culture -- to the extreme annoyance of everyone around him -Kickin' It Old Skool gives us Kennedy as a goofy white guy obsessed with... breakdancing culture. The key difference? In Old Skool Kennedy is a coma victim who awakens 20 years after a junior-high talent show (after breakdancing his way to a concussion, of course), only to find a world that's unlike the '80s. Wait, haven't I seen this movie before?
Old Skool hits all the familiar notes that started with The Brady Bunch Movie: '00s paranoia over child predators, the internet, a sexual revolution gone amok, mockery of '80s fashions... you know the drill. It probably won't surprise you that the main plotline of Old Skool involves Kennedy getting his old breakdancing gang back together, and a showdown with an old nemesis. (Oddly the showdown occurs on the dancefloor, but the nemesis is the emcee, not the opposing team.) He'll even woo his old junior-high crush again, too. (Played by Maria Menounos, she's one of the few highlights of the film.)
While Old Skool feels awfully tired in an era where '80s nostalgia is really starting to wear thin (seriously: It's almost time for '90s nostalgia!), at least give Kennedy props for getting a boatload of '80s has-beens to appear in cameos, including Erik Estrada, John Ratzenberger, and both David Hasselhoff and K.I.T.T. (as themselves). If you were alive and watching TV during this decade, you'll find something to give you a smirk. You may be hoping for more, of course, but try not to forget just exactly what we're dealing with here.
