Interesting documentary but rather one-note, as LaLee's Kin tracks one ultra-poor Mississippi school and one even poorer family over a few months as the school tries to improve its standardized test scores enough to stay open and the family (LaLee's titular kin) tries to stay fed and clothed. It's easy to blame their problems on the legacy of cotton (read: slavery), but when we discover LaLee is one of 23 children, the lack of birth control (read: common sense) becomes possibly a more sensible target. Nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar.
