Still going strong. The first of only two adaptations of William Golding's famed high school assignment (the 1990 version starred Balthazar Getty!), this experimental production from Peter Brook (who'd later direct the kooky Marat/Sade) featres no adults, only kids washed up on an island. If you don't know the story, it's a sadistic boys choir that goes native, fractioning into a body-painting tribe that deigns the other children 'the beast,' and thus subject to ritual slaying and sacrifice. Creepy and all too realistic, check the Criterion DVD for countless extras that enrich this already amazing film.
