War Photographer
Interesting documentary full of heartbreaking imagery, and I don't mean Christiane Amanpour. This self-referential film follows the escapades of a photographer (a film about a filmer) named James Nachtwey, widely considered one of the best war photographers ever. From Rwanda to Kosovo, he captures the endless heartbreak of wartime. War, as we see through Nachtwey's eyes -- and through an odd device attached right to his still camera -- is hell. The melodrama gets a bit thick at times, unfortunately, with Nachtwey's grating, monotone voice-over that borders on whining. Worst is the string-heavy music, which drones throughout the film and is so manipulative that it makes you want to puke.
Other than that, good little doc that deserved its Oscar nomination.
