Underworld Beauty

A film review by Christopher Null - Copyright © 2004 Filmcritic.com

Interesting but light, this gangster film gives us thugs who are after a cache of diamonds which one hapless fellow swallows before falling to his near death. The diamonds end up in the hands of his friend, but the gangsters suspect they have fallen to his little sister, an innocent girl who quickly becomes indoctrinated into the Japanese underworld (where she is reinvented into the titular Beauty). The story is unfortunately too simplistic to merit repeat viewings, though director Seijun Suzuki succeeds at holding our interest thanks to his choice of starlet Mari Shiraki, an angsty moll-in-training who would work with Suzuki again two years later.

Aka Ankokugai no Bijo.
