I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Not much of a surprise. This documentary, which traces the folkish band Wilco as they put together their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, is short on insight and long on The Usual -- "There's a lot of collaboration..." Zzzzzz. Black and white photography is meant to look artsy but comes off as pretentious (though it's very effective at helping to hide the fact that it's shot on video). Even when the band threatens to break up and has to switch to a new label, it's hard to feel much of the pain, as the film engages in the same old outright hero worship of its forebears Bittersweet Motel and Barenaked in America. You know the band will come out on top (YHF was widely, critically heralded as the best album of the year) but you'll wade through 90 minutes of concert footage (fine) and contract signings (dull) to get there.
It's somewhere...
